Biography:
Various "Sartorises" appear in many of Faulkner's fictions. In the "Appendix" they appear in a phrase - "the Compsons and Sartorises and their ilk" - describing how the "Snopeses" "took over the little town [of Jefferson] following the turn of the century" (338). The Sartorises represent the old plantation aristocracy that founded Yoknapatawpha, just as the Snopeses represent the class of parvenus who rise to positions of status in a newer South by largely unscrupulous means.
Note:
Although the old Jefferson family, the Sartorises, is noted to have "faded" from the town as the Snopeses take over in the twentieth century, the last-known Sartoris descendant, Benbow, is born in 1920 and is still alive at the end of <em>Flags in the Dust</em>.
