Dilsey's two-word entry - "They endured," (343) - is impossible to pin down to a date, a place or a reference point for the word "they": in terms of "these others," the category provided by the "Appendix" at the top of the list that ends with Dilsey, "they" might refer specifically to her and her family, or it may refer more largely to African-Americans like Dilsey and her family, or even to all blacks. It can perhaps be summed up as a token of respect for the subservient but generous role that black characters, and especially Dilsey, play in the Compson saga that ends on this note.
