Summary:
Charles parenthetically notes how Young Bayard dies while testing an airplane. This event is more fully described in Flags in the Dust, where it takes place in June, 1920. This novel's chronology, on the other hand, is inconsistent, since the bank elects a new president shortly after Bayard's accident, but the narrative says he "finally had himself killed" in Ohio before that election even took place (125); our dating of the event ignores the impossibility.
