Summary:

Addressing his readers directly as "you," Gavin explains Flem's "problem," which seems to have shifted from how to get revenge on his wife's lover now to how to make sure that in the future he would get, through his daughter, the money from his father-in-law's will (296). In this passage Gavin also refers to himself in the third person - as "the bachelor lawyer" and "the middleaged (whiteheaded too even) small-town lawyer" (298) - whose role in Linda's life makes Flem feel threatened.
