Description:

Doctor Peabody says, just before they give the settlement a name, that "We already got a church"; according to him, "that's Whitfield's cabin" (23). The basis for his claim is probably that Whitfield (who does not otherwise appear in the story) regularly holds some kind of religious service inside his cabin. In later Yoknapatawpha fictions, "Whitfield" is the name of a Protestant minister who preaches in Frenchman's Bend, but although this Whitfield is presumably an ancestor, his cabin must be in the immediate area that, a few sentences after Peabody's claim, acquires the name of Jefferson.
