Notes:
After riding for some time, Colonel Sartoris pulls out in front of Ringo and Bayard galloping full speed up a hill. When Bayard and Ringo catch up with him he sends Ringo's horse into the thicket and makes Bayard go over the crest of the hill. With great commotion he makes it seem as if a lot of men are surrounding the Union soldiers bivouacked around a fire on the other side of the hill. The ruse works and the Union soldiers are forced to surrender.
Summary:
In a dramatic but also comic scene, Sartoris captures sixty Yankee troops almost single-handedly. He is supported, unwittingly, by Bayard and "Lieutenant" Ringo (30).
