Summary:

An extraordinary passage that supposedly occurs as Gavin drives the car the last mile up the dirt road to the Caledonia chapel. From the top of the ridge, Chick looks south, back at Yoknapatawpha, "his whole native land" (147): the county's topography is described in some detail. Chick then turns his thoughts in the opposite direction, to the North as a place which a white Southerner is born to "defy" (149). Much of these pages are again Gavin's monologue, now focused on race and regional relationships. The event ends with Chick looking at the unpainted church, and the grim Protestant message - "Burn" - it seems to symbolize (154).
