Description:

When talking to the Yankee Lieutenant in "Riposte in Tertio," Ringo mentions "the quarters" that are "back yonder" behind the destroyed big house on the Sartoris plantation (142), but that larger area is never described. Only two of the cabins in the quarters are depicted in the novel. Before the Yankees burn the white family's mansion, this is the cabin occupied by Joby and Louvinia. Given Joby's seniority, his cabin is likely the one closest to the main house. After the Sartoris plantation mansion is destroyed in "Retreat," Bayard and Granny move into the cabin, "with a red quilt nailed by one edge to a rafter and hanging down to make two rooms" (78). After the war, while rebuilding the new mansion, the living arrangements change; as Bayard explains: "After Granny died Ringo and Louvinia and I slept in the cabin, but after Father came Ringo and Louvinia moved back to the other cabin with Joby and now Father and I slept on Ringo's and my pallet and Drusilla slept in the bed behind the quilt curtain where Granny used to sleep" (192). (The "other cabin" has its own entry.)
