Description:

This location represents both Hawkhurst, a large cotton plantation, the road that passes in front of it, and the railroad that once ran behind it. Located in Alabama, but not far from the Mississippi border, the plantation belongs to the Hawk family. Mr. Hawk has died in the Civil War; at Hawkhurst now are Rosa Millard's sister, Louise, and Louise's children Drusilla and Denny. The main house was burned down by Union soldiers and all that remains are piles of ashes and four chimneys, so the white family has moved into the cabin of the former slave Jingus on the plantation grounds and most if not all of the slaves seem to have left to follow the Union army. The grounds also hold a family graveyard and border on a railroad track. When Bayard last visited Hawkhurst several years earlier, the newly constructed track was in pristine condition. Now, the tracks have been dismantled and wrapped around trees by the Union troops.
