Unnamed Mother of Narrator

In "Tomorrow" she is mentioned once, when "Uncle Gavin" tells the narrator to tell "your mother" about the trip they will be taking out of town (94). In the Yoknapatawpha saga, she is Maggie Mallison, the daughter of Judge Stevens, the twin sister of Gavin Stevens, wife of one Charles Mallison and the mother of another, "Chick"; her role in the various late Yoknapatawpha fictions in which she appears is usually defined by her relationships to these male figures.

Mr. Holland

In "Tomorrow," Mr. Holland is the foreman of the jury that cannot reach a verdict in the Bookwright murder trial; Chick recognizes him as the man arguing in exasperation with Mr. Fentry.

Stevens-Mallison Home in "Tomorrow" (Location)

Barely mentioned in this story, the house where Chick Mallison lives is close enough to the Square and the jail for him to walk to both fairly quickly. Since his family is one of the more established and important in Jefferson, it is obviously in a good neighborhood. Based on the role this residence plays in the novel Intruder in the Dust, the most likely place to locate it is at the edge of town, northwest of the courthouse.

Tennessee in the Civil War in "Ambuscade" (Location)

Tennessee, where Colonel John Sartoris has been fighting for the Confederacy, is the state immediately to the north of Mississippi, about 60-70 miles from the approximate location of Yoknapatawpha County. During the time in which the story is set, it is occupied by Union troops who have not yet advanced as far south as Yoknapatawpha. It was the location of some of the fiercest fighting in the western theater of the Civil War, especially the battle of Shiloh, which took place April 6-7, 1862 some twenty miles north of Corinth, Mississippi.

Corinth, Mississippi in "Ambuscade" (Location)

Corinth is a town in extreme northeastern Mississippi, roughly 60-70 miles from the approximate location of Yoknapatawpha County, and 20 miles south of the Shiloh battlefield. After their loss at Shiloh, Confederate soldiers retreated to Corinth, but the city fell to Union forces at the end of May 1862 - which is what Loosh is referring to when he tells Bayard, after destroying the make-believe Vicksburg, "I tell you nother you aint know. . . . Corinth" (5). Bayard knows "that's not far" from Yoknapatawpha (3).

Vicksburg, Mississippi in "Ambuscade" (Location)

Vicksburg, a city on steep bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, was a strategically important Confederate stronghold in the Civil War. It was the target of several major campaigns by Union troops, including a naval campaign led by Admiral David Farragut that began in May 1862 and continued into June and July of that year, but the city's location high above the river made naval bombardment impractical. The city finally fell to Union forces led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863, after a 47-day siege.

Tennessee

The state of Tennessee is about 60-70 miles north of the fictional location of Yoknapatawpha County. When Memphis is counted along with the rest of the state, over half the Yoknapatawpha fictions include scenes in or mentions of Tennessee, but Memphis has its own Location entry in the index, as does 'Tennessee in the Civil War,' which figures in 7 fictions. The rest of the state is mentioned or used as the scene of events in 10 fictions.

Corinth, Mississippi

Corinth is a town in extreme northeastern Mississippi, twenty miles south of the Shiloh battlefield and about sixty miles from Sartoris. Historically, after their loss at Shiloh, Confederate soldiers retreated to Corinth, but the city fell to Union forces at the end of May 1862 - which is what Loosh is referring to in "Ambuscade" when he tells Bayard Sartoris, after destroying the make-believe Vicksburg where Bayard and Ringo have been playing war, "I tell you nother you aint know. . . . Corinth" (3, 5).

Vicksburg, Mississippi

Although a small city, Vicksburg played a big role in the Civil War. Located on steep bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, it was a strategically important Confederate stronghold, especially after it became the last point on the river to remain outside Union control. That made it the target of several major campaigns, including a naval assault led by Admiral David Farragut that began in May 1862 and continued into June and July of that year, and the army campaign led by General Ulysses S. Grant that lasted over half a year.

Judge Stevens'|Gavin Stevens' Office in "Tomorrow" (Location)

As Faulkner's career developed, more and more events took place in the law office that Gavin Stevens inherited from his father, also a lawyer. Not much happens there in this story, but enough to locate it off Courthouse Square, up a flight of stairs from the street.
