Cumulative Characters

This index is our attempt to identify and bring together the data we've entered for the hundreds of Characters who appear - and often re-appear - in the Yoknapatawpha fictions. The Characters are listed alphabetically. Use this link to view a Characters by Frequency table.

About two-thirds of these Characters were never given names by Faulkner. Throughout Digital Yoknapatawpha we identify them as "Unnamed _____" - for example, "Unnamed Sheriff." For instances of multiple "Unnamed" characters in same category, each is numbered in this index according to the order of his or her appearance in a published fiction. For example, if you use the Search Characters>Cumulative engine ( at http://faulkner.iath.virginia.edu/family/cumulative_characters/ ) to search for "Unnamed Sheriff," you'll find that there are 14 in the Yoknapatawpha fictions; "Unnamed Sheriff 1" appears in The Sound and the Fury and "Unnamed Sheriff 14" in The Mansion.

The cumulative character biographies for these men and women were created from the text-by-text biographies for each Character, written over a period of years by the entire team of collaborators, and revised (sometimes very significantly) by me for these cumulative entries.
